Privacy, terms and safety

1. Privacy statement
The data controller for personal data in FERDEN is Marius Sletta (private individual, Norway). Contact: mariuss.sletta@gmail.com.
What we store
- Account: name, username, email (for sign-in), home location, bio and profile picture.
- Trips: name, place, dates, notes, planned routes and GPS tracks you record.
- Gear and packing lists you register.
- Images: gear photos are stored on your own device; photos in posts/trips may be stored in the cloud.
- Emergency contact: name and phone number — stored in a separate, private table only you can access.
- Location: collected only while you actively record a trip or share a tracking link, then deleted (see “Retention”).
- Social: posts, comments, friends and invitations.
- Notifications: if you enable push, we store the browser push subscription (an anonymous endpoint). You can turn it off anytime.
Where it is stored
Data is stored with Supabase (databases in the EU — Frankfurt, Germany) and locally on your device, so the app works offline. Access rules (RLS) ensure you only see your own data and what friends explicitly share.
Sharing with others
- Emergency-contact tracking: when you share a tracking link, the recipient can see your planned route and last position via a secret link (token). No profile or user ID is exposed. You can stop sharing at any time; otherwise it stops working 7 days after the trip ends.
- SMS: the app opens a ready-made message in your own messaging app — we send no SMS on your behalf, and you must press send yourself.
- Friends: see your feed and profile based on relationship (own / friend / follower).
- Images in posts: the post itself is only shown to those you share with, but the image file is stored at a public, unguessable URL. Do not share images you want to keep strictly private — we are working on making these fully private.
Third-party services
FERDEN uses these services to function. Some receive data when you use the feature:
- Anthropic (AI gear scanner): when you scan gear with the camera, the image is sent to Anthropic for analysis.
- met.no (weather); Kartverket/Geonorge, Esri and MapTiler (maps); OpenStreetMap/Nominatim (place search); OSRM (routing); Open-Elevation (elevation) — receive coordinates/searches.
- Serper (product search for gear specifications).
- Supabase (database/storage) and Netlify (site hosting).
Retention
Account and trip data is stored until you delete it or request account deletion. Active tracking links are visible until the trip ends (or you stop sharing), and for up to 7 days after. Local data stays on your device until you sign out or clear the app.
Your rights (GDPR)
You have the right to access, rectification, erasure and data portability. You can export all your data as a JSON file in the app, and delete your account yourself. Privacy questions: mariuss.sletta@gmail.com.
2. Terms of use
- FERDEN is provided “as is”, without warranties of availability or freedom from error.
- You are responsible for the content you add and share, and for not violating others’ rights or applicable law.
- Do not misuse the service (spam, harassment, illegal or harmful content).
- You must be at least 16, or have a guardian’s consent.
- We may change, limit or discontinue the service, and update these terms. Material changes are announced in the app.
- Disputes are governed by Norwegian law. As a consumer you may always bring a case before your local court.
3. Safety and liability
FERDEN is a tool for planning and sharing — not a guarantee of your safety.
Other reservations
- Weather and avalanche data (met.no, Varsom) are advisory. Use your own judgement and consult official sources.
- GPS accuracy, elevation and compass may be wrong, especially in steep terrain or weak signal.
- Offline maps only cover the area you downloaded in advance.
- You use FERDEN at your own risk. We are not liable for injury, loss or incidents resulting from use of the app.
